How To Make A Senior Parent More Comfortable After A Stroke

Author: Ketan Shah

When your senior parent comes home after being in the hospital because of a stroke, they are likely going to need post-hospital care for a bit. Depending on the severity and its impact on function, they may need physical therapy and speech therapy as well. But the process of healing and going through therapies can be difficult and tiring for seniors. Try doing some of these things to make your senior parent more comfortable at home after a stroke:

Set Up A Main Floor Bedroom

If your senior parent lives in a house with two or more floors it will make them much more comfortable to have a bedroom set up for them on the first floor. Going up and down the stairs can be very exhausting, and it can increase the risk that they will fall and hurt themselves. If there is no place on the main level to create a full bedroom, consider putting a comfortable bed in the living room where your senior parent will be close to the main hub of the house, the kitchen. Your senior parent will probably enjoy being on the main floor where they can talk with a caregiver and anyone who drops by throughout the day.

Get Them Some New Pajamas

Your senior parent may have to be in their pajamas for awhile after they come home from the hospital. You can make them more comfortable by getting them some nice cozy new pajamas to wear while they get better. There’s something very comforting about new clean pajamas just out of the dryer. Your senior parent will appreciate the effort of you getting them some fun new PJs they can wear while they are stuck in bed.

Make Sure They Have Fun Things To Do

Staying in bed all the time can be very boring for seniors. Make sure there is a TV in the room for them to watch. But also get some of their favorite movies on DVD or stream them. Get some cards and board games so that you or a caregiver can play games with them. You may even want to make sure they have access to paints, yarn, or other craft supplies so that they can make things to keep themselves occupied while they are stuck in bed.

Stock Up On Their Favorite Foods

Comfort foods are something that seniors usually crave when they come home from the hospital. That’s not really a surprise considering that seniors typically don’t eat much in the hospital because of the quality of the food in most hospitals. So before they get home or just after they get home head to the store and stock up on the comfort food your senior loved one really enjoys. Get some healthy things too, of course, but let them have the cake they love, or that pasta dish that they only eat on special occasions.
