Our Caregivers are more than just helping hands. They’re companions, advocates, and trusted sources of comfort for the clients and families they support.
Whether assisting with personal care, helping with specialized daily needs, offering companionship, or simply bringing a warm smile and steady presence into the home, they help individuals live safely and independently at home, often during life’s most vulnerable moments.
Meet Ashley, a dedicated Caregiver from Home Helpers® Home Care of Somerset and London. She is just one of thousands of Caregivers across the nation who provide compassionate, personalized support to their clients and families.
This is Ashley’s story of exceptional care from the heart.
On May 16, 2025, a devastating tornado struck London, Kentucky.
Ashley was caring for two elderly clients, a couple living with late-stage dementia, when their home took a direct hit. Looking out the window, she saw the lightning and trees bending in the wind.
Ashley went to her clients and focused on making sure they were safe. As the storm hit, she stayed close and used her own body to shield them.
“Ashley actually climbed in the bed with my mom and used her body to shield my mother’s body, and the whole time reassured her. And my mom told me the next day that the whole time Ashley was telling her, ‘I’ve got you. I’ve got you. I’m going to take care of you. I’m going to take care of you.’”
— Mark, client’s son
Ashley stayed with her clients until the danger passed. She protected them, reassured them, and kept their safety at the center of everything she did.
In that moment, Ashley showed what dependable care can mean when it matters most.
Ashley’s response during the tornado reflects the way she cares every day.
She pays attention. She stays calm. She puts her clients’ safety and comfort first.
That matters to clients and families. When Ashley walks through the door, families can feel reassured that their loved one is with someone who takes their safety and comfort seriously.
That trust is built through attention, compassion, and the steady presence Ashley brings to each visit.
For clients living with dementia, that kind of consistency can make a meaningful difference. Ashley takes time to understand routines, preferences, and personalities so her clients feel respected, safe, and valued.
During the storm, those qualities became impossible to miss. Ashley responded quickly, stayed close to her clients, and focused on their safety until the danger passed.
That is who Ashley is as a Caregiver. She shows up with compassion on ordinary days and she can be counted on when it matters most. During the tornado, she showed that same commitment under extraordinary circumstances.
Ashley was recently honored as one of Home Helpers® Home Care’s 2025 Exceptional Caregivers of the Year for the courage, compassion, and dependability she brings to the clients and families she supports.
Our Exceptional Caregivers are not just dependable. They are not just kind. They go above and beyond in ways that make a meaningful difference for clients and families. They meet difficult moments with empathy, adapt when needs change, and help clients maintain comfort, dignity, and independence at home.
Ashley’s response during the tornado reflected the same compassion, dependability, and commitment she brings to her clients every day. In a frightening moment, she focused on their safety, stayed by their side, and reassured them until the danger passed.
For Ashley, Caregiving is rooted in love. Her response during the tornado showed that care is more than completing tasks. It is about helping people feel safe, offering comfort, and helping them feel less alone when they need support most.
“Caregiving to me is unconditional love. You’re giving somebody else hope, a chance to feel like they’re not alone.”
— Ashley Vanwinkle, 2025 Exceptional Caregiver of the Year
