The Holiday Visit Check-In

How to Talk With a Loved One About Needing Help

The holidays can be one of the few times each year when everyone is together under the same roof. Beyond sharing meals and traditions, the time you spend together can create an opportunity to check in with a loved one and have an honest conversation about how things are going at home.

That conversation is not always easy.

A loved one may be hesitant to accept help because they value their independence, do not want to feel like a burden, or simply do not believe they need assistance. Instead of approaching the conversation as something you need to convince them of, think of it as an opportunity to listen.

Start With Questions, Not Conclusions

Rather than saying, “You need someone to help around here,” try asking questions that give your loved one room to share.

You might ask:

  • “How have things been going around the house?”
  • “What parts of your daily routine are easiest?”
  • “Is there anything that has become more difficult lately?”
  • “Are there things you would like to do more often but haven’t been able to?”
  • “Would having a little help with errands or meals make things easier?”

The goal is to understand your loved one’s perspective before suggesting solutions.

Focus on What They Want

Home care does not have to mean having someone in the home all day. Your loved one may be open to help with one specific task while preferring to handle everything else independently.

For example, they might appreciate someone who can prepare a few meals, provide transportation, help with light housekeeping, or spend time with them while a family member is working.

Starting small can make professional care feel less overwhelming.

Avoid Making the Visit Feel Like an Inspection

It can be tempting to look closely at the house, refrigerator, medication routines, or finances when you are concerned. However, your loved one may feel judged or embarrassed if they believe the visit has become an evaluation of what they can and cannot do.

Instead, let your observations guide questions and conversation.

Give Your Loved One Time

Your loved one may not be ready to accept help during your holiday visit. That does not mean the conversation was unsuccessful.

Sometimes simply introducing the idea gives someone time to think about it. You can revisit the conversation later without making it feel like a decision has already been made.

Remember That Accepting Help Can Look Different for Everyone

For some loved ones, accepting care may begin with a few hours each week. For others, it may start with transportation, companionship, or help around the house.

The right approach is one that respects your loved one’s preferences while providing support where it is genuinely useful.
