Top 10 Health and Wellness Tips for Seniors
Author: Debbie Humphrey
As an aging adult in Tarpon Springs, I do my best to practice self-care by making healthy food choices, eating a nutritious diet, exercising, staying hydrated, engaging socially, and getting good, quality sleep. Those are the primary elements of my personal wellness journey, and seniors should try their best to do the same for an improved quality of life.
However, in my experience as a Certified Senior Care Advisor, I’ve noticed many of our senior clients often fall short of health and wellness goals (if they have them at all) for several reasons. These may include physical constraints, mental health challenges, side effects of medications, or a lack of energy and motivation, just to name a few.
The problem is that many seniors are set in their ways and unwilling to try new things or stay physically and mentally engaged, despite the health benefits.
August is National Wellness Month, and because Home Helpers aims to support seniors and promote their health and wellness, I have found a resource in Parentgiving that outlines the top 10 essential health and wellness tips for seniors.
- Stop smoking. Smoking is linked to cancer, strokes, and heart failure and can cause erectile dysfunction in men. It also causes wrinkling by attacking skin elasticity. Seniors who smoke should talk to their doctor about resources that are available to help them quit.
- Stay active. Seniors should find a physical activity they enjoy that will help keep them fit, give them more flexibility, and promote cardiovascular health. Physical activity helps seniors maintain a healthy weight, prevent or control illness, sleep better, reduce stress, avoid falls, and look and feel better.
- Eat a healthy diet. A balanced diet with nutritious foods, like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, that include plenty of vitamins and fiber can help seniors stay healthy. Many illnesses, such as heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis can be prevented or controlled with dietary changes in combination with exercise.
- Maintain a healthy weight. Extra weight increases a senior’s risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Seniors can measure their body mass index (BMI) to determine what their weight should be for their height. A balanced diet and regular physical activity can help seniors reach their goal weight. It is also beneficial to replace sugary drinks with water to stay better hydrated without empty calories.
- Prevent falls. Remove loose carpets or throw rugs; keep paths clear of electrical cords and clutter; use night lights in hallways and bathrooms; and wear shoes that provide adequate support and traction to prevent the risk of falling.
- Stay current on immunizations and health screenings. By age 50, women should begin mammography screening for breast cancer and men should be screened for prostate cancer. Many preventive screenings are available, so check with your doctor about which ones are recommended for seniors. Those new to Medicare are entitled to a “Welcome to Medicare” visit and all Medicare members receive an annual wellness visit every 12 months.
- Prevent skin cancer. Our skin becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic as we age. Wrinkles appear, and cuts and bruises take longer to heal. Protect your skin from damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun that can cause skin cancer by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved, loose-fitting clothing.
- Get regular dental, vision, and hearing checkups. Seniors should properly care for their teeth and gums by brushing and flossing daily and getting regular dental checkups. By age 50, most people notice changes in their vision. Common eye problems that can impair vision include cataracts and glaucoma, so seniors should visit an optometrist for vision exams that can detect changes in eye health. In addition, seniors often experience hearing loss over time, so auditory screenings are recommended.
- Manage stress. Seniors can better manage stress by trying exercise or relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga. Take time to socialize with family and friends and have some fun. Successful coping can affect our health and wellness, so practice positive thinking, too.
- Fan the flame. Age is no reason to limit your sexual enjoyment. Seniors can learn about the physical changes that come with aging and get suggestions from their healthcare provider who can help them make any necessary adjustments.
I firmly believe that seniors must take care of themselves for better health, wellness, and an improved quality of life. However, I realize that it is not always possible when seniors live alone in West Pasco or Pinellas Counties, or they suffer from physical or mental health conditions.
