Awake and Alert at Every Hour — Why We Don’t Offer Live-In Care

You’ll find two very different services both called “24-hour care” in Cincinnati. Live-in care places one caregiver in your home for days at a stretch — and that model assumes the caregiver sleeps a full night under your roof. Home Helpers of Cincinnati and NKY does not offer live-in care, by deliberate choice. Our 24-hour home care runs in rotating shifts, so the caregiver with your loved one at 3 a.m. began her shift rested and is awake, alert, and ready to help — the same standard we hold at 3 p.m.

We staff it this way because the families who truly need around-the-clock care usually need it most at night — wandering, sundowning, falls on the way to the bathroom, or simply the fear of being alone in the dark. A caregiver who is asleep down the hall can’t prevent the 2 a.m. fall. One who is awake in the next room can.

Shift care has two other advantages families notice quickly. No single caregiver burns out carrying your family alone, and because our caregivers are our own employees — screened, insured, trained, and backed up by a team — a sick day or a vacation never leaves a gap in coverage. What 24-Hour Home Care Includes

Your care plan is built around your loved one’s routines, not ours. Around the clock, caregivers help with:

Not every family needs all 168 hours a week. If days are manageable but nights are the worry, we build overnight shifts — for example 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. — with the same awake-and-alert standard. Within the first month, your Care Manager will also find one specific way to bring your loved one joy — a garden bed made reachable again, a Reds game on the radio with someone who’ll talk about it. If a quote from another agency is dramatically lower than ours, ask whether the overnight caregiver will be awake — that is usually the difference.

Is the overnight caregiver really awake all night?

Yes. Overnight shifts are working shifts, not sleeping arrangements. Your caregiver is awake, attentive, and checking on your loved one through the night — which is exactly when wandering, falls, and anxiety are most likely.

Will it be the same caregivers every week?

We build a small, consistent team for each 24-hour family and keep the same faces on the same shifts as much as possible — consistency matters, especially in dementia care. Because caregivers are our employees with a team behind them, an illness or vacation never means a stranger at the door unannounced; your Care Manager tells you who is coming.

How quickly can 24-hour care begin?
