Our Caregivers are more than just helping hands. They’re companions, advocates, and trusted sources of comfort for the clients and families they support.

Whether assisting with personal care, helping with specialized daily needs, offering companionship, or simply bringing a warm smile and steady presence into the home, they help individuals live safely and independently at home, often during life’s most vulnerable moments.

Meet Lisa, a dedicated Caregiver from Home Helpers® Home Care of Thousand Oaks. She is just one of thousands of Caregivers across the nation who provide compassionate, personalized support to help their clients and their families.

This is Lisa’s story of exceptional care from the heart.

“You’re Coming With Me”

On January 7, 2025, catastrophic wildfires broke out across Southern California, forcing nearly 200,000 people to evacuate and causing widespread destruction.

As the fires approached, Lisa remained calm and focused. She helped her client, Carol, pack the things she needed most: clothes, medications, and cherished belongings.

They waited anxiously to learn whether they would need to evacuate. When the evacuation order came through at 3 a.m. on January 8, everything felt uncertain and overwhelming. Finding an accessible place where Carol could stay on short notice seemed impossible.

Yet, Lisa did not hesitate.

She simply told Carol, “You’re coming with me.”

Lisa helped Carol evacuate safely and continued supporting her in the days that followed. The evacuation lasted nearly five days, and Lisa’s steady care gave Carol’s family comfort during an uncertain time.

“It ended up being almost five days of evacuation, and during that time we did not have to worry about my mom because we knew that she was not only in the loving, caring hands of Lisa, but actually probably having a good time. So that was beyond comforting.”
— Gayle, client’s daughter

Carol said Lisa was there for more than companionship. She also helped Carol stay safe and comfortable while assisting with transportation and daily routines. During the evacuation, that support became even more meaningful.

“What she did was beyond Caregiving. It was humanity, compassion, and devotion in their purest form. Lisa didn’t just care for me; she carried me through one of the hardest moments of my life.”
— Carol, Lisa’s client

“One of the Greatest Blessings in My Life”

Lisa’s care for Carol did not begin with the wildfires. Long before the evacuation, Lisa had become a trusted part of Carol’s daily life.

Carol describes Lisa as more than a Caregiver. From the moment Lisa walked into her home, Carol says Lisa brought “a sense of safety, warmth, and genuine friendship.”

Lisa helps Carol stay safe, prepares meals, and helps maintain her home. They spend time together watching movies, telling stories, and talking about life and loved ones. Lisa also helps with everyday routines that support Carol’s independence.

“Lisa is not just a Caregiver. She is one of the greatest blessings in my life. She protects my dignity, calms my worries, and fills my days with laughter and companionship.”
— Carol, Lisa’s client

For Carol, Lisa’s support is both practical and deeply personal. She anticipates Carol’s needs, brings comfort during difficult moments, and shares in the good ones.

Over time, Lisa has become what Carol describes in one simple word: family.

Exceptional Care from the Heart

Lisa was recently honored as one of Home Helpers® Home Care’s 2025 Exceptional Caregivers of the Year for the calm, focused, and unwavering care she provided when Carol needed her most.

Our Exceptional Caregivers are not just dependable. They are not just kind. They go above and beyond in ways that make a meaningful difference for clients and families. They meet difficult moments with empathy, adapt when needs change, and help clients maintain comfort, dignity, and independence at home.

Lisa joined Home Helpers® Home Care of Thousand Oaks in January 2022. Before working with Carol, she consistently supported clients with complex care needs. Her patience, compassion, and genuine love for Caregiving shine through, even in demanding situations.

During the wildfires, Lisa drew on those same qualities to help Carol evacuate safely and provide continued support in the days that followed.

“For me, it’s not a job. It’s like taking care of your family. Carol is like a mom to me.”
— Lisa Ilomin, 2025 Exceptional Caregiver of the Year

Lisa’s story is a reminder that exceptional care is often built through steady, everyday support. It shows up in meals prepared with care, a safe and comfortable home, a ride to the store, a conversation, a laugh, or a quiet moment of reassurance.

And when a crisis comes, that same care can become a source of safety, comfort, and relief.

Through her patience, compassion, and steady presence, Lisa helps Carol feel safe, respected, independent, and cared for at home.
