I cannot let October creep away without mentioning a very important awareness campaign about long-term care plans for seniors and aging adults. It’s something we never think about when we’re young, but it is vital we consider as we age.
I admit, I work with seniors on a daily basis, some in assisted living facilities, and I have not considered long-term care in my own case, should I develop serious health issues, and am unable to live on my own. Of course, my plan is to grow old with my husband in our home until death do us part, but in this dreadful year of COVID-19, I think it is certainly time to closely examine the possibilities and be proactive about a future long-term care plan for the two of us.
Just the words “long-term care” can conjure images of frail, elderly people in nursing home beds, or perhaps, seniors sitting alone, blankly staring out of windows at ALFs, as life passes them by. These depictions of long-term care facilities do not constitute the only options for long-term care plans for seniors.
Aside from nursing homes and ALF’s when health conditions warrant, AARP suggests a long-term care plan for seniors and aging adults that includes alternative possibilities:
- Explore retirement communities where maintenance, housekeeping and dining services are provided
- Consider changes to the home to make it safer, more comfortable, and easier to navigate
- Learn and implement technology that helps seniors stay independent
- Contact community-based programs and services, like Meals on Wheels and senior centers
- Research skilled medical care provided by a nurse or other healthcare professional
- Discuss moving-in with family or friends who can provide minor assistance
- Hire a caregiver to help with light housekeeping, meals, and personal care, like bathing and getting dressed, 24-hour care, and even more specialized Alzheimer’s and dementia care.
