5 Summertime Skincare Suggestions for Seniors
Author: Home Helpers Home Care
I don’t know about you, but I tend to have dry skin throughout the year, especially during the summer months. I routinely drink plenty of water and other hydrating beverages I enjoy, I use lotion with broad-spectrum sunscreen, and facial moisturizers to minimize fine lines and wrinkles.
Because we live in the Sunshine State, much of our time is spent in the sun. After all, even walking from the house to the car, and from the car to local stores, exposes our uncovered skin to the sun’s harmful UV rays, and we lose hydration due to perspiration and respiration.
So, I did some research and found daily routines for seniors to protect and maintain their skin during the summer season and year-round. I encourage aging adults to adhere to these 5 summertime skincare suggestions to keep their skin in the best possible condition.
Whole You View said, “As we age, our skin undergoes various changes. Women over 50, in particular, may notice that their skin doesn’t retain moisture, or that fine lines and wrinkles are more pronounced. However, aging gracefully isn’t just a matter of genetics; your daily habits play a significant role.”
Hydration is the foundation of youthful skin.
Hydration is crucial for skin health. Well-hydrated skin appears plumper, smoother, and more radiant. Drinking enough water helps maintain the balance of body fluids, which is essential for transporting nutrients to skin cells and removing toxins.
Set a goal to consume 8-10 glasses of water each day and include water-rich foods like cucumbers and watermelons. Consider using moisturizers or a hydrating serum to help lock in moisture.
Sun protection is a must for ageless skin.
Prolonged sun exposure is one of the leading causes of premature skin aging. UV rays break down collagen and elastin leading to wrinkles and sagging skin.
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, even on cloudy days. Wear hats and protective clothing when outdoors for extended periods. Remember to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.
Gentle cleansing keeps skin balanced and healthy.
As skin matures, it becomes more sensitive and prone to dryness. Harsh cleansers can strip natural oils leading to irritation and dryness.
Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser. Avoid hot water as it can strip away natural oils. Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing, and apply a moisturizing lotion immediately after washing, bathing, or showering.
Nutrition fuels skin from the inside.
Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants play a crucial role in maintaining skin health. Vitamins C and E, for instance, offer antioxidant protection, while Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain skin’s lipid barrier.
Include foods rich in antioxidants like berries, nuts, green leafy vegetables, and fatty fish, like salmon for Omega-3s, in your diet. Ask your doctor about supplements if your diet lacks certain nutrients.
The beauty duo of stress management and sleep does your skin good.
High stress levels can lead to skin issues like breakouts and dullness. Quality sleep is essential for skin regeneration and repair.
Establish a relaxing bedtime routine. Practice stress reduction techniques such as meditation or yoga to wind down naturally. In addition, you should create your bedroom environment to promote restful sleep.
