THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO AGING IN PLACE IN ST. LOUIS
Helping St. Louis families plan with confidence, dignity, and peace of mind
By Lauren Teschendorf, Chief Growth Officer & CFO | Home Helpers Home Care of St. Louis
If you’re reading this, chances are someone you love is getting older. Maybe it’s your mom. Maybe your dad. Maybe your spouse. Or perhaps you’re beginning to think about your own future. Whatever brought you here, I want you to know something first. You’re not alone. There are thousands of articles on the internet about diseases, medications, retirement accounts, and senior living options. There are endless checklists, statistics, and opinions. But what I rarely found was a resource that helped families answer the questions they’re actually asking around the kitchen table.
Questions like… “Is it time to step in?” “How do I bring this up without hurting Mom’s feelings?” “What if Dad refuses help?” “How do I care for my parents while still showing up for my spouse, my children, my career, and myself?” Those aren’t just medical questions. They’re deeply human ones. And they’re the reason I decided to write this guide.
Before joining Home Helpers Home Care of St. Louis, I spent more than 15 years in healthcare and biotechnology, helping bring innovative medical products to market. Today, I have the privilege of combining that healthcare background with the deeply personal work of helping St. Louis families navigate aging with confidence, dignity, and compassion. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside countless local families as they navigate one of life’s most meaningful—and often most challenging—transitions. I’ve watched families find incredible peace because they planned ahead. I’ve also met families who wished they had started the conversation just a little sooner. Whether you live in Chesterfield, Creve Coeur, St. Charles, West County, or elsewhere across the St. Louis region, I hope this guide helps your family plan with confidence.
Planning isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about protecting what matters most and creating the freedom to make thoughtful decisions when life doesn’t go exactly as planned. But my passion for this topic isn’t only professional. It’s deeply personal. Like many people in their forties and fifties, I’m living what has become known as the Sandwich Generation. My husband and I are raising teenagers while also helping care for aging parents. Some days we’re talking about college visits. Other days we’re discussing medical appointments, medication lists, or helping a parent navigate the next stage of life. It’s a season that is both incredibly beautiful and incredibly demanding.
There are moments of joy. Moments of grief. Moments of gratitude. Moments when you wonder if you’re doing enough. I understand those emotions because I live them too. Families shouldn’t have to figure this out alone. Growing older is a privilege. Helping someone age well is an honor. But honoring the people we love should never require sacrificing our own marriages, our own children, our own health, or our own livelihood. The best care plans don’t simply support the older adult. They support the entire family.
That’s exactly what this guide is designed to help you do. My hope is that these pages give you practical guidance, thoughtful questions, and the confidence to begin conversations before a crisis forces them. I also hope they remind you that asking for help isn’t a sign that you’ve failed. Sometimes it’s one of the most loving decisions you can make. Whether your family needs support today, next year, or ten years from now, I hope this guide becomes a trusted resource you’ll return to often—and perhaps even share with someone else who needs it. Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your family’s journey.
God bless you,
Lauren
