Let’s say you’ve decided your parent needs some help at home. Good. That’s the right call.
Now comes the question everyone gets wrong.
“Should we just find someone on our own? It’s probably cheaper.”
Maybe. But cheaper is not the same as simpler. And in California, hiring a private caregiver comes with a set of legal and financial obligations that most Westside families have absolutely no idea they’re walking into. Here’s what nobody tells you before you hand someone a key.
The second money changes hands for caregiving services in California, you are a household employer.[1] Not sort of. Not technically. Legally.
Under California EDD rules, if you pay a caregiver $750 or more in a calendar quarter, which works out to roughly $250 a month, you are now required to register with California EDD, withhold California income tax and SDI from their paycheck, file quarterly payroll tax returns, and pay the employer’s share of state payroll taxes.[2] Did anyone mention that when you found this person through a neighborhood Facebook group? Didn’t think so.
California law requires household employers to carry workers’ compensation insurance. Your homeowner’s policy does not cover it.[3]
Picture this. Your privately hired caregiver slips on a wet bathroom floor and breaks their wrist. You are personally liable. Workers’ comp claims can easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars. And you’re sitting there thinking you went the private route to save money.
This is not a hypothetical. It happens regularly.
It’s 6:30am. Your parent’s caregiver just texted. They’re sick and not coming in. Your parent cannot be left alone and you have a 9am meeting in Century City.
If you hired privately, that’s your problem to solve right now. You’re on the phone at 6:30 in the morning trying to find someone your parent has never met, who you haven’t vetted, hoping it works out.
With Home Helpers Santa Monica, you make one call. We find a backup Co-Pilot, someone already vetted and in our system, and get them there. Your parent’s day stays on track. You make your meeting.
That’s the part the “it’s cheaper” math never accounts for.
When people say a private caregiver is cheaper, they’re usually not counting:
Add all of that up honestly and the cheaper option often isn’t.[4] It just front-loads the savings and hides the costs until something goes wrong.
When you work with Home Helpers Santa Monica, here’s what’s already handled before your parent’s Co-Pilot ever walks through the door. The background checks. The tax compliance. The workers’ comp. The payroll. The scheduling. The backup coverage. The supervision.
But here’s what makes us different from a lot of agencies. I’m Phil Mason, the owner of Home Helpers Santa Monica, and I’m personally involved in every client relationship we have. I do the initial assessments. I make the Co-Pilot matches. I check in with families regularly to make sure the care we’re delivering is actually working for your family. When you call us, you’re not getting a call center. You’re getting me.
You’re not paying more for care. You’re paying to not be an employer. For most Westside families, that’s worth every penny.
Don’t let the paperwork and liability of a private hire sneak up on you. Call Home Helpers Santa Monica and let us handle the logistics from day one. (310) 691-5637
