Quality home care isn't cheap, and we'd rather explain why than pretend otherwise. Here's what's actually behind the rate.

When you pay an agency, you’re not just paying for the hours a caregiver is in the house. You’re paying for everything that has to be true before they walk in the door โ and everything that keeps the care going when life happens.
Our caregivers are our employees, not contractors handed a 1099. That means we handle payroll taxes, Social Security, and Medicare the right way. It costs more than paying someone under the table โ and itโs the difference between a professional operation and one that leaves a family exposed.
2. Workersโ comp and liability insurance
Caregiving is physical work. If a caregiver is hurt on the job, workersโ compensation covers it โ so the family doesnโt. We also carry liability insurance and are fully bonded. When you hire privately, that protection usually becomes your responsibility. With an agency, itโs simply handled.
3. Full California labor-law compliance
California has some of the most detailed caregiver labor laws in the country โ overtime rules, meal and rest breaks, minimum-wage and scheduling requirements. We follow all of them. That compliance is baked into our rate, and itโs a big part of why a legitimate agency costs more than a caregiver found through a classified ad.
4. Scheduling and backup โ so someone always shows up
This is the part families donโt think about until they need it. Caregivers get sick. They have family emergencies. Sometimes they move on. With a private hire, thatโs your 6 a.m. phone call to solve. With us, a trained, vetted backup steps in and your loved oneโs routine keeps going. Maintaining a deep local roster and coordinating it around the clock is real, ongoing work โ and itโs a genuine part of what youโre paying for.
You can, and the hourly number will look lower on paper. But hiring a caregiver directly makes you a household employer โ which comes with tax filing, workers’ comp obligations, and California labor-law responsibilities that are easy to get wrong. And you become the backup plan when your one caregiver isn’t available.
Then there’s the practical matter of finding the right person in the first place โ running background checks, verifying licenses and certifications, and conducting interviews before anyone sets foot in your home. We take all of that off your plate.
For some families, that trade-off works. For many, the agency rate is worth it precisely because it makes all of that someone else’s job. We’re not here to scare anyone away from private hiring โ just to be clear about what the two paths actually involve.
This page is general information, not legal or tax advice. For your specific situation, check with a qualified professional.
The rate isn’t just for the time in the house. It’s for the peace of mind that the person in the house is qualified, protected, and reliably there.
