Here’s a question worth asking out loud.
When was the last time your parent had something on the calendar they were actually looking forward to?
Not a doctor’s appointment. Not a family obligation. Something fun. Something social. Something that was just for them.
If you’re struggling to answer that, you’re not alone. And it matters more than most families realize. High social engagement is linked to better cognitive health in seniors 65 and over across thousands of participants in the Health and Retirement Study.[1] Volunteering and regular community involvement are linked to a 22% lower mortality rate.[2] Having something to look forward to is not just pleasant. It’s a measurable protective factor against depression, cognitive decline, and early mortality.
The good news is that the Westside has an extraordinary amount to offer. The problem is most seniors and their families don’t know half of what’s available. Here’s the calendar worth knowing.
1527 4th Street, Santa Monica. This is the social hub of the Westside senior community and it’s genuinely excellent. Regular programming includes fitness classes, art workshops, computer literacy sessions, health screenings, legal aid clinics, and a full calendar of social events. Free or very low cost for Santa Monica residents. If your parent isn’t already connected here, this is the first call to make.
WISE & Healthy Aging has served the Westside for nearly 50 years with 35,000 clients served annually and over 800 volunteers.[3] The Club offers yoga, art classes, music appreciation, foreign language classes, day trips to cultural venues, bridge and card games, and peer counseling. What makes WISE genuinely special is the community. It’s warm, welcoming, and easy to walk in as a stranger and leave feeling like you’ve found your people. WISE also operates the only state-designated Alzheimer’s Day Care Resource Center on the LA Westside.
I recommend WISE to every family we work with. It’s that good.
Water aerobics, gentle yoga, strength and balance classes, and cardio programs designed specifically for older adults. For seniors on Medicare Advantage plans, the Silver Sneakers program often covers membership entirely. Worth checking before assuming it’s out of budget.
A typical well planned week for a Westside senior with a Co-Pilot might look something like this. Monday morning at WISE’s The Club for yoga and some time with the community. Wednesday at the Santa Monica Farmers Market. Thursday afternoon at the YMCA for water aerobics. Saturday morning at the Ken Edwards Center for a computer class. And one spontaneous outing built around whatever sounds good that week. A sunset at Palisades Park. Lunch at a favorite restaurant on Main Street.
That’s not a schedule. That’s a life.
I’m Phil Mason, owner of Home Helpers Santa Monica. Building a social calendar is something we do as part of every Cared-4 plan. The seniors who have things to look forward to are the ones who are thriving. It really is that simple.
