Why We're Planting a Field of Flags This Veterans Day

I grew up a military brat. My father was a career Army man, and so was my grandfather. I learned early what it means when someone you love puts on a uniform, and what it asks of the whole family. So when Veterans Day comes around, it isn’t just a date on the calendar for me. It’s personal.

That’s why I’m so proud that Home Helpers is taking part in the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Field of Flags this year. From Friday, November 6, through Friday, November 13, you’ll see our flags on display at our Newnan office, 284 Bullsboro Drive, honoring our veterans and every man and woman who has served this country. I hope you’ll stop by, take a moment, and think about the people those flags stand for.

What the Field of Flags Is All About

The idea is beautifully simple: each flag honors one veteran. Behind every one of them is a real story of courage, service, and sacrifice. Schools, churches, civic groups, and businesses like ours plant these fields around Veterans Day, and the donations raised go to support DAV’s free services for ill and injured veterans and their families.

To me, that’s what makes it special. It’s not just a display. It’s a community saying thank you and backing that thank-you with real help.

A Little History

DAV has been looking out for veterans for more than a hundred years. It was founded in 1920 by World War I veterans who came home wounded and found too little support waiting for them, so they banded together to make sure America kept its promises. Today DAV helps veterans and their families get the benefits they earned, from disability compensation and health care to job help and education, at no cost to the veteran.

The Field of Flags itself started in 2016, right on the front lawn of DAV’s national headquarters in Cold Spring, Kentucky. Families could sponsor a flag in honor of someone they loved who served. It caught on, and now DAV sends flag kits to groups all over the country so they can plant their own fields at home. This year’s national Field of Flags day falls on Veterans Day itself, Wednesday, November 11.

Why This Means So Much to Us

For almost 20 years, I’ve sat at kitchen tables with veterans and their families, helping them work through the VA benefits that can pay for care at home. I’ve heard stories from men and women who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf, and beyond. I’ve seen the photos on their walls and the medals tucked in drawers. Every one of those visits reminds me of my dad and my granddad.

Our caregivers feel it too. Every day they walk into the homes of people who gave so much for us. Our whole Home Helpers family considers it a true honor to care for our veterans, and we never take that trust lightly. Planting these flags is one small way we can say thank you, out loud and together.

To every veteran, every service member, and every family who served right alongside them: Thank You! It’s an honor to stand with you.

Home Helpers Home Care of Newnan Named IFA Franchisee of the Year

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The International Franchise Association (IFA) has named Beth and Phillip Dow, owners of Home Helpers Home Care of Newnan, as recipients of the 2026 Franchisee of the Year Award.

Both Beth and Phillip were honored at the IFA26 Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C., Sept. 14-16, for being outstanding franchise owners with excellence in entrepreneurship, community outreach, workforce development, and service to others. Nominated by their brand (Home Helpers Home Care), the IFA Franchisee of the Year awards are given to top franchisees from IFA member brands across industries and communities around the country.

“Families depend on us during deeply personal moments, and that responsibility guides every decision we make,” says Beth. “Receiving the IFA Franchisee of the Year Award is an incredible honor, but this recognition truly belongs to our Caregivers and Support Team. They are the heart of what we do, showing up every day with compassion and dedication to make a difference in the lives of the people we serve. Their commitment is what makes our success possible.”

Beth and Phillip have owned Home Helpers of Newnan for over 19 years providing in-home care services to clients in Coweta, Fayette, Troup, Carroll, Meriwether and South Fulton counties. The Newnan-based franchise employs 12 administrative team members, three nurses, and more than 100 caregivers.

In April, Home Helpers of Newnan took home two awards from the 2026 Home Helpers Home Care National Conference. Those awards were the CEO Award and CEO Masters Award. In May, the Newnan franchise was named “Franchisee of the Month” by Franchise Dictionary Magazine. And later in July, Beth and Phillip added another franchise with the purchase of Home Helpers Home Care of Canton.

The Franchisee of the Year awards recognize leading franchise owners for their community involvement, fostering a strong workforce, assisting their fellow franchisees when called upon, and embodying the entrepreneurial spirit. Their outstanding performance and contributions help strengthen not only their business but also the entire franchise business model.

There are approximately 832,000 franchise establishments across the U.S., providing nearly 8.8 million direct jobs and generating more than $907 billion in economic output. According to Oxford Economics, franchising on average provides higher wages and better benefits than non-franchised businesses, as well as greater entrepreneurial opportunities to minorities, women, veterans, and other underrepresented communities.

Beth and Phillip were honored at the Franchisee of the Year luncheon on Sept. 15.

Caregiver CNA Scholarship Winners Announced

Home Helpers Home Care of Newnan & Canton announced on Wednesday, October 7th this quarter’s Caregiver CNA Scholarship winners – Cortney Dixon, Phaedra Wilcox and Amanda Adams.

Typically, only two scholarships are awarded each quarter, but this quarter’s candidates were so strong that we added a third. These caregivers show up for their clients every day with skill, reliability, and heart, and we are honored to invest in their next step.
