We’re excited to continue our new series pulling back the curtain on the people – particularly our Caregivers – who make Home Helpers Home Care of Newnan what it is. Next up: Karmaletta.

A Trip That Changed Everything

Twelve years ago, Karmaletta’s grandmother asked her a simple question: would she like to take a trip together, so she could visit all thirteen of her brothers and sisters one more time? Karmaletta said yes, and the two of them spent six months on the road, laughing and reconnecting with family Karmaletta hadn’t known she had. What she didn’t know was that her grandmother was already sick.

When they arrived home, her grandmother told the family she had bone cancer, and that time was short. Karmaletta didn’t hesitate. She quit her job as an administrative assistant, moved in with her grandmother, and became her caregiver. Her grandmother lived three more years — far longer than doctors expected — and Karmaletta was by her side when she passed.

“I’ll never regret the three years I got to take care of her and spend with her,” Karmaletta said. “We were so close, and I’ll never forget that six-month trip and how happy it made me to take care of someone.”

From that point on, Karmaletta chased that feeling. Caring for people became her purpose, and eventually, her profession.

Relationships Built On Trust

Karmaletta has spent the past year with Home Helpers, and in her 12 years of caregiving she has formed bonds that go far deeper than the job description. One client, a man she cared for over eight months, was initially reluctant to accept help. Over time, the two connected over their shared Christian faith, and he came to trust her completely with his care. She’s built a similarly close relationship with a 96-year-old client of three to four months, the two of them talking and watching TV together as the woman has come to rely on Karmaletta’s care every single day.

Her longest and most meaningful relationship, though, was with a client living with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). He, too, was hesitant to accept care at first. But after a few months of Karmaletta showing up, consistently and with genuine warmth, he came to trust her completely, and the two became close friends bonded by their Christian backgrounds.

“He told me that if it wasn’t for me, he wouldn’t have made it that far,” she says.

That client eventually let Karmaletta help him with showers he’d resisted before, and she often went down to his basement workshop to help him pick up things he’d dropped and to help him finish birdhouses he wanted to build. It wasn’t part of the job. It was just what you do for someone you care about.

The Small Things That Aren’t Small At All

Ask Karmaletta what makes a great caregiver, and she won’t talk about tasks or schedules. She’ll talk about showing up fully — in the hard moments and the good ones — and giving your whole heart to the people in your care. In practice, that has meant catching things other people missed: a change in a client’s behavior, or medication given incorrectly by a family member, caught and corrected before it became a bigger problem. It has meant staying calm and steady beside a client after a fall, keeping him calm until paramedics arrived.

And it has meant something as simple as rubbing a client’s feet at the end of a long day, a small gesture that means the world to the person receiving it.

She surprises her clients with birthday gifts. She remembers what matters to them. She stays present in ways that go beyond any job description, because to Karmaletta, the job doesn’t really end when the shift does.

Karmaletta said, “Our job just doesn’t stop when we clock out and go home.”

Turning Her Own Hardest Chapter Into Compassion

In 2015, Karmaletta’s life changed in an instant. She was diagnosed with septic MRSA in her heart and bloodstream, and spent six months in the hospital fighting for her life. Her recovery took four years and included two major strokes, one of which affected her short-term memory.

Rather than let that experience define her limits, Karmaletta let it deepen her empathy. Having lived through her own strokes and memory challenges, she now understands, in a way few caregivers can, exactly what her clients with strokes, dementia, Alzheimer’s, and memory issues are going through.

“Because of the things I have gone through, I can relate and be more understanding, compassionate, and patient,” she states.

It’s a hard-won kind of expertise, one that shows up in her patience, her steadiness, and her ability to meet clients and families exactly where they are.

Why She Does It

For Karmaletta, caregiving isn’t just a career choice. It’s a calling.

“I became a caregiver because I enjoy taking care of people, but I continue to be a caregiver because it’s God’s path for my life.”

Her advice to anyone considering the profession is simple and direct: it’s the most rewarding thing you’ll ever do. Clients and families notice the difference. What they appreciate most about Karmaletta, she says, is that she’s on time, attentive, and compassionate, and the trust that clients place in her is something she carries with pride.

Karmaletta gives her all, shows up when her clients need her most, and consistently goes beyond what’s asked of her, exactly the qualities that make a caregiver truly exceptional.

Karmaletta’s story is proof of what ‘Beyond the Job’ is all about — caregiving isn’t a role you fill, it’s a purpose you live out. She has spent 12 years as a Caregiver and the past year with Home Helpers Home Care of Newnan. Thank you, Karmaletta for sharing your journey with us.
