Serving Veterans Beyond the Home—Supporting Community and Connection

All veterans deserve our respect and gratitude. Our great state of Texas is home to more than 1.5 million veterans, and virtually every Texas family has a direct connection to someone who has served.

Each year, a new custom challenge medal is designed and minted for Walk participants.
At Home Helpers Home Care, our commitment to veterans goes far beyond the care we provide in their homes. In addition to providing care for veterans in their homes through the VA’s Community Care (formerly known as Care in the Community) and Aid & Attendance programs, our owner, Leo Walker, is the founder and organizing force behind the annual Pearland Veterans Day Walk.
From the day in 2014 when he first approached then-Mayor of Pearland, Tom Reid, to present the idea for the Walk, until this very day, he has led the planning team for this official City event. Through his in-home care agency, Home Helpers, he has underwritten all of its costs for more than ten years.
“We wanted to create something that truly honors our veterans in a visible and lasting way—and also brings people together to connect and give back.” — Leo Walker

During the past decade, the event has grown, fueled by the support of the Pearland business community, including perennial local business sponsors such as H-E-B, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Best Coupons, Community Impact, Rob Ray’s Taproom, and Angie Infante’s Graphic Icons. The Walk has become an annual event that brings people together to celebrate, support, and thank veterans in the greater Pearland area.

In addition to designing and donating the event t-shirts every year, Angie Infante (Angie Infante’s Graphic Icons) serves along with Norma Guerra-Martinez, Paul Chimenti, Nancy Kozanecki, and Cheryl Gracia on the planning team. The Walk is possible only because of their year-round dedication to creating this family-oriented event where everyone in the greater Pearland community comes together to show Veterans their sacrifice has not been forgotten.
We are grateful as well to the many past and present State, County and City officials who have joined the Walk as participants, sponsors or speakers.

A Walk with Purpose
Held every November at the Pearland Recreation Center, the Veterans Day Walk is a powerful show of appreciation for those who’ve served our country. Participants walk alongside veterans, families, active-duty personnel, and community members to raise awareness and funds for local nonprofit organizations that support veterans and their families.
Past beneficiaries of the Walk include Camp Hope, the PTSD Foundation of America, Counseling Connections for Change, Pearland Neighborhood Center, VFW Post 7109, HIKE for Mental Health, Community Assistance Providers of Greater Pearland, Combat Marines Outdoors, and the Warrior Refuge.

Many veterans, back from the battlefield, still face their own private battles every day. We can’t turn away from their struggles. At Home Helpers, we believe that honoring veterans means more than words. It means showing up—with care, with presence, and with heart.
