Tips for Maintaining Healthy Skin, Even in Cold Weather

Author: Ralph Johnson

Did you know that seniors are more prone to dry, cracked skin during winter months? According to the American Academy of Dermatology, cold air, low humidity, and indoor heating can strip moisture from the skin, increasing the risk of irritation and infection.

Here are some simple and effective ways to keep your skin healthy and hydrated during winter:

  1. Moisturize Frequently: Use a fragrance-free moisturizer immediately after bathing or washing hands. Look for products containing urea, ceramides, glycerin, shea butter or cocoa butter for extra healing. Avoid products that contain sodium lauryl sulfate, which is known to be drying.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and noncaffeinated beverages throughout the day to keep the skin hydrated from within. Herbal teas can also be a comforting option in the colder months. According to the National Council on Aging, a general rule is to take one-third of your body weight and drink that number of ounces in fluids each day.
  3. Use Warm Water and Limit Bathing Time: Bathe with warm water and for no more than 5-10 minutes. While tempting in cold weather, hot water can dry out your skin by removing its natural oils.
  4. Use a Humidifier: Indoor heating (fireplaces and furnaces) create dry heat which lowers humidity and can cause dry skin. It also can bother the inside of the nose and the throat. Adding moisture to the air with a humidifier can help combat the drying effects of indoor heating. Aim for a humidity level of 30–50%.
  5. Protect Skin Outdoors: Always wear gloves and scarves to shield your skin from harsh winds and cold temperatures. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen, as UV rays can still damage skin in winter.
