Senior Care Should Include Regular Pedicures

Author: Debbie Humphrey

One elderly woman under senior care loves to get her nails done at the same nail salon every month, maybe a few weeks longer between pedicures. This outing is important to her, because not only does it get her out of the house, it gives her something pleasurable to look forward to!

Not only is this woman’s spirits lifted when she has a mani/pedi, it is important that she does this as a measure of health-consciousness. You see, feet and toenails play more of a role in our health than you might think.

According to the California Podiatric Medical Association, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes can cause poor circulation in the extremities. People who suffer from these conditions should not try do-it-yourself pedicures, because they are more prone to infection and can easily cut the nails too short, or clip the corners which can lead to ingrown toenails. Swelling in the feet can also cause the toenails to become ingrown, or appear to be, which is very painful.

Moreover, toe and foot pain affects a person’s gait which causes strain on the ankles, knees, hips and spine. Foot pain is not normal and should promptly be examined by a podiatrist.

If a senior has diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, it is important to keep their feet clean and toenails kept short but not too short, as stated above. By visiting a licensed nail professional every 3-6 weeks, the elderly under senior care and their caregivers can rest assured the senior’s feet and toes are in good hands.

Pedicures are not just for women anymore! Men of all ages are often found getting manicures and pedicures in nail salons and spas, and senior men are no exception! It is equally as important for men to keep their feet and toenails clean and healthy, especially if they suffer from the maladies of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
