How a Home Helpers® Home Care Caregiver Became a Lifeline for a Couple, Enabling Independence at Home

Our Caregivers are more than just helping hands. They are companions, advocates, and trusted sources of comfort for the clients and families they support. Whether assisting with personal care, offering mobility support, or simply offering a warm smile and a steady presence, they help individuals live safely and independently at home, often during life’s most vulnerable moments.

Meet Michelle, a dedicated Caregiver from Home Helpers® Home Care of Memphis, Tennessee. She is just one of thousands of Caregivers who collectively provided nearly 9 million hours of in-home care to over 18,000 clients throughout the United States and Canada in 2024.

For more than a decade, she has supported the same couple – Kenneth and Grace – providing personalized, 24/7 care that has allowed them to stay together and continue living independently at home after Kenneth experienced a stroke and Grace experienced a fall.

A Decade of Dedication

Michelle began supporting the couple over 10 years ago after Kenneth experienced a stroke and needed help with mobility, speech, and daily routines. Michelle became a steady presence in their lives, learning their preferences, understanding their rhythms, and stepping in to provide the kind of care only someone deeply familiar with them could give.

Last year, Grace experienced a fall that required several weeks of care and recovery. Michelle brought Kenneth every day to the rehab facility so that Grace could see her “true love.”

Michelle now works seven days a week, managing everything from meal preparation and grocery shopping to laundry, wellness calls, and transportation to medical appointments. Whether she’s coordinating care or simply making sure there’s enough chocolate in the house, Michelle has become the first person the family calls when help is needed.

“The biggest blessing has been her consistency. She’s been here so long that she’s gotten to know Grace and Kenneth and just all their routines and what they like and what they don’t like.”

— Shawna (Niece of Client)

Supporting Health, Safety, and Connection

Michelle’s role involves both physical assistance and emotional insight. She helps Kenneth in and out of his wheelchair each day and takes special care during outings to ensure both he and Grace are safe. She anticipates their needs before they have to ask and provides calm, capable support when things become challenging.

Because of her long-term relationship with Kenneth and Grace, Michelle has become a trusted member of their family. She reads Kenneth’s body language and helps him communicate through gestures. Additionally, she ensures they both maintain healthy habits — encouraging hydration, balanced meals, and daily movement.

Michelle also makes wellness calls, tracks routines, and keeps their environment clean and orderly. These daily actions may seem small, but they are essential in preserving the couple’s independence, quality of life, and overall well-being.

Caregiving with Heart and Grace

Michelle’s care extends beyond tasks. She brings calm, comfort, and connection into every room she enters. Her presence helps prevent confusion and frustration. Through it all, Michelle remains grounded in her purpose: to help her clients through whatever they’re facing.

Even after all these years, Michelle’s motivation hasn’t changed. She finds joy in the work and fulfillment in the relationships she’s built. To her, Kenneth and Grace are more than clients — they’re family.

Exceptional Care from the Heart

Michelle was recently named one of Home Helpers® Home Care’s 2024 Exceptional Caregiver Award winners for her extraordinary dedication, consistency, and heart-centered service.

Our Exceptional Caregivers are not just dependable. They are not just kind. They go above and beyond in ways that have a profound impact on the lives of those they care for and their families. They navigate situations – sometimes difficult ones – with empathy and adapt with grace when things don’t go according to plan. And they do their best to empower their clients to maintain independence and dignity.

“I’ve always been a helper. I want to know what they’re going through so that I can help them go through it. This is a calling, and I’ll be doing it for a long time.”

— Michelle

Michelle’s story reminds us that Caregiving isn’t just about showing up— it’s about helping clients live fully and safely at home, no matter what challenges arise.
