Exceptional Care from the Heart: Debra’s Story

How a Home Helpers® Home Care Caregiver Delivers Compassionate 24/7 Support at Home
Our Caregivers are more than just helping hands. They are companions, advocates, and trusted sources of comfort for the clients and families they support. Whether assisting with personal care, providing memory support, or simply offering a warm smile and a steady presence, they help individuals live safely and independently at home, often during life’s most vulnerable moments.
Meet Debra, a dedicated Caregiver from Home Helpers® Home Care of Prattville, Alabama. She is just one of thousands of Caregivers who collectively provided nearly 9 million hours of in-home care to over 18,000 clients throughout the United States and Canada in 2024.
Her diligent support eases daily challenges, fosters independence, and enhances the quality of life for a bedbound client who she helps support 24/7.
Supporting 24-Hour Care with Consistency and Heart
Ms. Wanita’s family promised they would try to keep her in her house as long as they could. When her healthcare needs increased, and she became bedbound, her family made the decision to pursue 24/7 in-home care.
This level of care requires a coordinated team effort, and Debra quickly became a reliable and steady presence within that team. She helps train fellow Caregivers and contributes to a shared care plan that includes the client’s family.
Through her leadership, Debra created a safe, structured environment that brings comfort and peace of mind to both the client and the client’s family. With Debra’s guidance and consistency, the team is able to deliver reliable support while giving the family the flexibility to step away when needed.
Starting the Day with Comfort and Structure
Each morning, Debra begins her shift by making sure her client is clean, comfortable, and ready for the day. She prepares a country-style breakfast and ensures the home environment is organized and safe.
Throughout the shift, she handles a wide range of household responsibilities — washing and folding clothes, running the dishwasher, vacuuming, and dusting — all while staying engaged with her client’s needs.
In addition to maintaining the home, Debra provides assistance with her client’s activities of daily living (ADLs), such as personal hygiene, grooming, and mobility support. Her approach encourages the client to participate wherever possible. Even small tasks like folding towels or brushing teeth are incorporated into the daily routine in ways that promote independence and preserve motor skills.
Encouraging Independence and Engagement
Although the client is bedbound, Debra encourages daily engagement through structured activity. She provides subtle physical stimulation by involving the client in tasks like towel folding, and she creates opportunities for social interaction and mental stimulation throughout the day.
Debra and her client often spend time watching game shows, singing, and talking — simple moments that bring joy and a sense of normalcy. These shared routines help support emotional well-being and create a familiar, comforting rhythm to the day.
Before ending her shift, Debra logs the medical information in a care journal — a tracking system she initiated to help ensure seamless communication among team members.
Exceptional Care from the Heart
Debra was recently named one of Home Helpers® Home Care’s Exceptional Caregiver Award winners, a well-earned recognition of her skill, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the people she serves.
Our Exceptional Caregivers are not just dependable. They are not just kind. They go above and beyond in ways that have a profound impact on the lives of those they care for and their families. They navigate situations – sometimes difficult ones – with empathy and adapt with grace when things don’t go according to plan. And they do their best to empower their clients to maintain independence and dignity.
Debra is the type of person who lights up the room and lifts the spirits of everyone in it. She is always polite and gracious, and adorns everyone with her special, endearing words.
“Doing this work brings me enjoyment because I love taking care of people. I love giving and sharing. What I really love about this job is seeing the [client] being happy and knowing that they are being loved.”
Debra
She is good-hearted, generous, and considerate of the needs of others. And she always has an uplifting word of encouragement which makes a meaningful difference in her clients’ lives.
Benefits of 24/7 In-Home Care
For many families, the idea of round-the-clock care at home may seem daunting or out of reach. But with the right team in place, 24/7 in-home care offers a safe, personalized alternative to facility-based care, especially for individuals with chronic conditions, limited mobility, or complex needs.
In-home care allows loved ones to remain in familiar surroundings, maintain meaningful routines, and continue living with dignity, even when health challenges increase. It also provides essential relief for family members, reducing stress and ensuring no one has to navigate caregiving alone.
“Debra is a natural at it. She is comforting and knows exactly what to say to make somebody feel better. She’s just amazing to be around. We are blessed to have her.”
