- Bethesda gets its name from a local Presbyterian church built in 1820 and rebuilt in 1849, which was named after the Biblical Pool of Bethesda – meaning “House of Kindness” in Hebrew
- The community was originally called “Darcy’s Store” after William E. Darcy who ran the local store, and wasn’t officially renamed Bethesda until 1871 when the new Postmaster changed the name
- The oldest Japanese government-sponsored supplementary school in the United States, the Washington Japanese Language School, was founded in 1958 and maintains its school office in North Bethesda
