Caring for a loved one can be as rewarding as it is challenging. Family members often dedicate their time and energy to ensure their loved ones receive the best care, yet it is important to remember that putting your own care needs first is equally essential. Taking a break not only recharges your emotional and physical well-being but also helps you continue providing excellent care. Home Helpers offers respite care services that provide the necessary breaks in caregiving, enabling you to be at your best. With professional assistance, you can feel confident that your loved one is supported while you attend to personal matters or simply take time to relax.
Respite care is a break provided by a professional caregiver so you can recharge and focus on yourself for a while. This supportive service is designed to allow you uninterrupted time away from caregiving responsibilities while ensuring that your loved one continues to receive quality help at home. The schedule for respite is customizable, fitting your unique needs whether you require coverage for one afternoon a week or more frequent assistance. Planning a vacation, managing work commitments, or taking time during holiday seasons becomes easier knowing that reliable respite is available. Moreover, as the care needs of your loved one evolve, Home Helpers offers the flexibility to integrate additional services, such as overnight support or a live-in arrangement if desirable.
Respite care benefits both the client and the family caregiver in several important ways. By providing a temporary break, it gives caregivers the freedom to take a vacation, run errands, or simply recharge emotionally and physically. In doing so, it helps improve overall health and reduces the risk of burnout, ensuring that caregivers do not lose their vigor in the face of ongoing challenges. Additionally, this service maintains the comfort and familiarity of home for your loved one while preserving family unity. Some of the significant advantages include:
Respite care is not confined solely to those caring for elderly loved ones. It extends its benefits to caregivers supporting a wide array of individuals, including those who are recovering from surgery, receiving end-of-life care, or caring for someone with disabilities. This approach emphasizes relieving caregiver stress regardless of the specific challenges faced. Payment for respite care, similar to other in-home caregiving services, varies from family to family. For some, the cost is managed out-of-pocket or through private funds, while others may receive partial payment through insurance policies such as Medicare. It is important to speak with your insurance provider and local service representatives to determine what financial assistance can be made available for your family.

See Why Families Trust Us
My sister and I have been navigating our Mom's dementia/healthcare for the last several months. At the end of February 2025 Mom had just been discharged from the hospital and I had come up from my home in NC to visit her and help make her transition home. My stepfather ordered a number of assistive devices and assured us that he'd take care of Mom but, unfortunately, that did not happen. After several days of noncommunication, my stepfather consented to allow us to arrange a home health nurse to assist him 2-3 days/week. I called to get a listing of agencies and Home Helpers Home Care came up first in my search...and the agency name resonated with me. I reached Catherine Dickson, VP of Operations, and found her to be incredibly helpful and understanding of my efforts to arrange home healthcare there on Long Island, despite me residing out-of-state. Moreover, I shared with Catherine that our Mom is extremely sensitive to the voice of an individual and needed a nurse with an extremely soothing/sensitive voice and demeanor. She arranged for Sarah Remy to begin that Monday morning, March 10th at 11AM, the day and time agreed upon by my stepfather. Shortly after 11 I received a call from Catherine who stated that when Sarah arrived at Mom's residence, she was sitting in a urine/feces-soaked diaper/couch in a catatonic state and barely breathing and that they called 9-1-1! We were in shock that Mom was found in that state, but incredibly grateful to Sarah for her communication with her home office and for staying until EMS workers arrived at the apartment to transport Mom to the hospital. Several times that day, and several days, weeks, and months thereafter, Catherine has called to check on Mom's status. I have been incredibly thankful for the level of service/care they provided on March 10th, as well as their willingness to provide assistance and/or information regarding care. It has been an emotional road the last few months as Mom fought for her life, but she is now in a rehabilitation center with a daily care that gives my sister and me a peace of mind. I cannot say enough to express our gratitude for the level of care and authenticity that the staff of Home Helper's Home Care has provided even beyond that horrific day...they were lifesavers for our family...literally!
