Beat Cold and Flu Season with a few easy steps

Fall is finally here, and that means cooler weather and shorter days. For seniors, especially, this means paying extra attention to staying healthy during the upcoming cold and flu season. Just a few simple changes to your daily routine can help you stay vibrant and keep your immune system strong in the months ahead!

1. Sleep In

As the days grow shorter, your body may naturally need more rest. Getting enough sleep is key to helping your immune system fight off sickness. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Studies show that people who don’t get enough sleep are up to 4.5 times more likely to catch a cold. Establishing a regular bedtime routine can help ensure you’re getting the rest your body needs.

2. Boost Immunity Through Diet

With fall comes more sweets and comfort foods, but it’s important to eat a diet rich in nutrients. Eating well supports your immune system and overall health. Try to focus on seasonal fruits and vegetables like leafy greens, squash, and citrus fruits. According to the CDC, only 1 in 10 adults get the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day, yet these foods are packed with vitamins and minerals that can keep your immune system strong.

3. Stay Hydrated

Even though it's cooler outside, staying hydrated is still important. Water helps your body run smoothly, from digestion to circulation, and dehydration can weaken your immune system. Drinking plenty of water, herbal teas, or warm broths can help you stay hydrated. Research shows that proper hydration can reduce the risk of serious infections by up to 20%, making it a key factor in staying healthy.

4. Stay Active

As the weather cools, staying active indoors is a great way to keep your immune system strong. Simple activities like stretching, yoga, or walking in place can help maintain your energy and mobility. Exercise also helps with better sleep and reducing stress, both of which are important for your health during cold and flu season.

By making small adjustments to your routine, such as getting enough sleep, eating well, staying hydrated, and moving more, you can stay healthy and prepared for cold and flu season.
