National Wellness Month is a reminder that healthy aging isn’t about making dramatic lifestyle changes. More often, it’s the small, consistent habits that help older adults remain safe, healthy, and independent at home.
As a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA)® and owner of Home Helpers Home Care of West Marietta, I often remind families that wellness isn’t only about doctor appointments. It also includes daily routines, social connection, nutrition, movement, and maintaining independence.
Here are five habits we encourage every family to focus on:
1. Keep Moving Every Day
Regular movement helps maintain strength, balance, flexibility, and confidence. It does not have to be a formal workout. Walking around the house, stretching, doing chair exercises, gardening, or taking a short walk outside can all help. The most important thing is finding an activity that is safe and realistic for the individual.
Older adults should check with their healthcare provider before starting a new exercise routine, especially if they have health or mobility concerns.
2. Stay Connected
Wellness is not only physical. Social connection is also an important part of emotional and cognitive health. Spending time with family, talking with friends, attending church or community activities, volunteering, or simply sharing a meal with someone can help reduce loneliness and provide a sense of purpose.
Sometimes families focus so much on appointments, medications, and physical needs that they overlook how important regular companionship can be.
3. Make Your Home Safer
Small changes often prevent big problems.
Consider:
Many families are surprised by how a few simple adjustments can help someone remain at home longer.
4. Fuel Your Body
Good nutrition and hydration become increasingly important with age.
Simple meal planning, healthy snacks, and staying hydrated can improve energy levels and overall wellness.
When cooking becomes difficult, having a little extra support can make healthy eating much easier.
5. Ask for Help Before There Is a Crisis
This may be the most important habit of all.
Many families wait until after a fall, hospitalization, or other emergency before they begin looking for help. I understand why.
Accepting support can feel like giving up independence, but the right support can actually help preserve it.
I often hear families say, “I wish we had started sooner.”
Home care does not have to begin because of a crisis. Sometimes a few hours of companionship, help with meals, personal care, transportation, or respite for a family caregiver is enough to make daily life safer and less stressful.
Starting early can help older adults remain independent in their own homes longer.
