Damey and I know from experience that talking to aging parents about long-term care can be one of the most important and most difficult conversations a family can have. While it may be tempting to wait until a health crisis forces the issue, discussing senior care options early can help everyone feel more prepared and confident about the future.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 70% of people age 65 and older will need some type of long-term care service or support during their remaining years.

For some older adults, the need for care develops suddenly following an illness, injury, surgery, or health emergency. For others, it happens gradually as changes in strength, balance, mobility, memory, or vision make everyday activities more challenging.

Tasks such as preparing meals, bathing, dressing, managing household chores, navigating stairs, or driving to appointments and errands may eventually require additional support. For families in Canton and surrounding communities, planning ahead can make it easier to find the right senior care solution while respecting an aging loved one’s wishes and independence.

3 Tips for Talking to Aging Parents About Long-Term Care

1. Ask Questions and Be Patient

One of the best ways to begin a conversation about long-term care is by asking questions rather than telling your elderly loved one what they need.

Many older adults understandably want to remain independent and stay in their own homes for as long as possible. Instead of approaching the conversation as though decisions have already been made, invite your loved one to share their thoughts.

Consider asking:

  • What is most important to you as you get older?
  • Would you like to remain at home as long as possible?
  • What kind of help would make everyday life easier?
  • Have you thought about what would happen if you suddenly needed additional care?
  • Have you considered your financial and legal plans for future care needs?

Be patient. This may need to be an ongoing conversation rather than a single discussion. Giving your loved one time to process their feelings can help them feel heard and respected.

2. Involve Family Members and Discuss Realistic Care Options

Long-term care planning should involve the people who may eventually play a role in providing support. If siblings, relatives, or close friends are likely to help, talk openly about everyone’s expectations, availability, and limitations.

Family caregiving can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also become overwhelming. Many family caregivers are balancing careers, children, relationships, and other responsibilities. A caregiving plan that seems manageable today may become difficult as an older adult’s needs increase.

That’s why it’s important to discuss professional in-home care as part of the conversation. Services such as respite care, companion care, personal care assistance, and specialized senior care can supplement family support and help reduce the risk of caregiver burnout.

Professional in-home care can also provide families with greater flexibility while helping an older adult remain safely and comfortably at home.

3. Lead With Compassion and Empathy

Perhaps the most important tip is to remember how your loved one may feel about needing care.

Accepting help can be emotionally difficult. Your senior loved one may worry that accepting assistance means giving up independence or control over their life. They may also feel frustrated, embarrassed, or afraid about changes they are experiencing.

Listen without judgment. Give your loved one an opportunity to express concerns, preferences, and fears. Most importantly, reassure them that asking for help does not mean they are losing their independence.

In fact, the right amount of in-home care may help an older adult maintain independence by providing assistance with the tasks that have become difficult while allowing them to continue enjoying the routines and surroundings they value.
