4 Vital Tips to Support Men’s Health

Author: Brian Heckman

Most men do not rush to the doctor every time they experience an ache, pain, or random
symptom. Many men fear what the doctor might diagnose, or they choose to minimize the
importance of seeing their provider due to sensitive issues, busy schedules, macho attitudes, or
all of the above.

I could’ve been one of those men, but I married a wonderful nurse, and she makes her
professional assessments whenever I have a health issue. If Damey thinks I need to see my
doctor for additional examinations, tests, or labs, I promptly schedule an appointment.

Unfortunately, men who do not have a partner who is a professional in the healthcare industry,
often neglect their health which explains why men usually don’t live longer than women.

“In general, men have poorer health habits and a shorter life expectancy than women. This may
be because they are more likely to engage in unhealthy behavior and are less likely than
women to adopt preventive health measures,” says Men’s Health Network.

During Men’s Health Month, Damey and I want to review 4 vital tips to support men’s health
that can significantly improve their quality of life and their chances for successful outcomes
when physical or mental health conditions arise.

See All Your Doctors
No one really likes going to the doctor, dentist, dermatologist, or optometrist, especially men,
but attending regular appointments is very important to keep up with and maintain optimal
health. When you keep your doctor visits on track, you reduce your risk of developing illness
and disease.

For men who experience chronic health conditions, routine checkups with doctors allow them
to monitor the disease’s progression over time.

Exercise Regularly
Staying active is very beneficial to your overall health. It’s more than good for you physically,
but it also helps you mentally. Spending 30 minutes each day working out will help your body
and mind feel and perform better, increase relaxation, improve sleeping patterns, boost mental
health, and more.

In addition, exercise can reduce your risk of developing serious diseases.

“As a tip, we recommend buying some workout gear to have at home, over just getting a gym
membership. Having something as simple as an adjustable dumbbell set at home can open up
the number of workouts you can achieve from home. This can make it easier to get a quick 30-
minute lift in, as you cut down on the time spent traveling back and forth to the gym.

Maintain a Healthy Diet
Choose nutritious foods over fast and convenience foods that are highly processed and packed
with sodium, sugar, and unhealthy cholesterol. By choosing fresh fruits and vegetables, you will
notice big improvements in your energy levels, and you may notice positive changes in other
aspects of your health, as well.

Consider creating a meal plan or schedule to keep you on track. Prepping meals in advance will
save you time and may work best for active lifestyles.

“Finding and maintaining a balanced diet is a great way to improve your health across all fronts.
Use the summer grilling months to start eating cleaner white meats and veggies,” suggests
Men’s Health Network.

Prioritize Mental Health
Men often neglect their mental health, but your overall wellness largely depends on it. “Your
mental state is just as important as your physical one, so you should always make an effort to
keep track of it just as you would with other parts of your body.”

Consider a self-care routine to keep your mind and body at ease. If necessary, make an appointment with a mental health specialist. Nowadays, there are a variety of online therapy services available, meaning you can get the help you need from the comfort of your own home.

Don’t let your busy life interfere with your mental and physical well-being. Taking a few minutes out of each day to focus on your health will have a positive impact on your quality of life.
