Why I Started This

I started Home Helpers because of a woman named Nancy.

When my grandfather could no longer manage on his own, my grandmother, Rose, tried to care for him. She was in her mid-80s, and she couldn’t do it. It broke her heart that she couldn’t. So our family brought in Nancy.

Nancy did more than care for my grandfather. She got my grandmother out walking. She made sure they both got up in the morning and ate real meals. She was no pushover, and they needed that.

Within a few months, Nancy was at our family dinners, and every cousin I had knew her name. She stayed part of our family for the rest of my grandparents’ lives.

My other grandmother, Grace, had dementia. She lived with my uncle while he was raising five kids and working from home. There was no Nancy in that house. They did it alone, and it was hard.

I’ve seen it both ways. The difference is one person in the home. Finding that person for your family is our whole job.

We look for people like Nancy, and we hire them as our own employees. Each one passes a criminal background check before meeting a client. We train them before they ever work for your family. Then Drew Tyler and I pick the caregiver who fits your family.

Drew is our administrator, and he runs the agency day to day. He has spent over ten years in home care and hospice. For most of that time, he ran home care agencies across the Northwest. He’s sharp, and he has a soft heart. I hired him because he knows this work better than I do.

Before this, I spent ten years in tech, and by the end I was running my own firm. Originally from the South, my wife, Lucy, and I moved to Bend to be near her brother and his kids. We also wanted a place where we’d want to be outside. Our daughter, Rose, is named after my grandmother. When I left tech, home care was the only thing I looked at seriously.

If you’re caring for a parent, you already know it’s hard. We can’t turn back the clock. But you won’t be doing it alone, and we won’t make it harder than it is. We don’t require a minimum number of hours per visit or per week. We don’t charge overtime unless you ask for one caregiver for more than 40 hours a week.

Say your dad lives in Central Oregon and you live in San Francisco. One night at nine, something changes with him. Call us, and Drew or I will pick up. If you need someone at the house, one of us will go.
