For many older adults, staying at home provides comfort, independence, and a sense of familiarity. But I’m often concerned about the safety of some of our senior clients when their caregivers’ shifts end.
I’m not the only one. Families worry, too, about what could happen if a senior loved one falls, experiences a medical emergency, or needs help when no one is nearby. That is why I regularly recommend 24-hour monitoring and personal emergency response systems (PERS),which can provide an added layer of safety and reassurance while helping older adults maintain their independence at home.
24-hour monitoring is a safety service designed to help older adults get assistance when they need it, day or night. Depending on the system, an older adult may wear a medical alert pendant, wristband, or carry a mobile device that can connect them to assistance.
Unlike traditional check-in calls that happen at scheduled times, a 24-hour monitoring system is available around the clock. This can be especially valuable for seniors who live alone, have mobility concerns, are at risk for falls, or simply want the peace of mind that help is accessible whenever they need it.
At Home Helpers® Wheaton and Naperville, 24-hour monitoring via Direct Link® can complement in-home care services and provide families with another tool to support a loved one’s safety and independence.
A Personal Emergency Response System (PERS), sometimes called a medical alert system, is a technology-based solution that allows an individual to request help during an emergency.
Many PERS devices include an easy-to-use help button. When activated, the device can connect the user with a trained response center or designated emergency contacts, depending on the system. Some modern devices like the Mobile Companion also offer features such as fall detection, GPS location capabilities, two-way communication, and mobile connectivity.
These systems can be particularly helpful for older adults who may experience an unexpected fall or other emergency when family members or caregivers are not immediately present.
Emergencies don’t follow a schedule. A fall can happen in the middle of the night, and a senior may need assistance while home alone. Having access to a monitoring system can make it easier to request help when it is needed.
Many older adults want to remain in the home they know and love for as long as possible. Safety technology can be one part of an overall aging-in-place plan, helping seniors feel more confident about living independently.
Family members cannot always be available 24 hours a day. Work, travel, family responsibilities, and distance can make constant supervision unrealistic. A personal emergency response system can provide reassurance that their loved one has another way to seek assistance.
Falls are a significant concern for older adults. When a senior is unable to reach a phone after falling, a wearable emergency device may provide a faster way to call for assistance. Some systems can also detect certain falls automatically, although fall detection technology may not identify every fall.
24-hour monitoring is not a replacement for professional caregiving, but it can work alongside in-home care services. Caregivers can provide hands-on assistance, companionship, personal care, medication reminders, meal preparation, light housekeeping, and other support, while monitoring technology provides an additional safety resource when a caregiver is not present.
I know from experience that every senior has different needs. When considering 24-hour monitoring, families should think about mobility, fall risk, living arrangements, cognitive abilities, emergency response needs, and how much assistance is needed throughout the day.
For some older adults, combining 24-hour monitoring with personalized in-home care can create a stronger safety net while preserving independence.
I understand that choosing care and safety solutions for an aging loved one can feel overwhelming. A thoughtful assessment can help families identify the right combination of services and technology based on their senior loved one’s individual needs.
