Professional Brown Bag Medicine Reviews Promote Senior Health and Safety

At Home Helpers, many of the seniors we care for rely on daily medications, vitamins, or supplements to support their health. From time to time, some of our clients share concerns about unexpected side effects or uncomfortable reactions. This isn’t unusual. Most medications come with possible side effects. Problems arise when issues are linked to incorrect dosages or interactions between prescriptions and supplements, which can sometimes lead to serious health risks.

Managing medications and supplements can feel overwhelming, especially for seniors. Yet, they play a vital role in maintaining both physical and mental health. What many people don’t realize is that even common discomforts, like a headache or an upset stomach, may actually be side effects of prescriptions, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, or even daily vitamins and supplements.

Considering the average senior takes 10 prescription medications, it’s no wonder confusion exists. That’s a lot of medicine to keep track of and remember! During Talk About Prescriptions Month, I want to emphasize the importance of having your primary care provider or pharmacist conduct professional Brown Bag Medicine Reviews to promote senior health and safety.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) explains, “The Brown Bag Medicine Review is a common practice that involves encouraging patients to bring all their medicines and supplements to their (doctor or pharmacy) visit and review them. The goal is to determine what medicines patients are taking and how they are taking them. The process can uncover medicine errors and medicines missing from your list.”

Here are two sobering practical experiences with brown bag reviews as quoted by the AHRQ:

“Out of 10-15 brown bag reviews, only 2 were accurate.”

“On the day of the brown bag review, we had a patient experiencing unexplained symptoms. It wasn’t until we looked at his medicine bottles that we realized he was taking a double dose of beta blocker. Had we not had the medicine bottles to identify the problem, we would have sent him to the hospital.”

Many drugs have similar side effects to the conditions for which they were prescribed, and they can cause dangerous interactions when combined with others in the body. This is a serious problem because many seniors don’t even realize how many pills they are taking, or why, and the potential negative consequences of a high drug load.

So, what is a Brown Bag Medicine Review? I know we are probably one of the last generations to understand “brown bagging it,” but it is a simple way to explain the concept of putting ALL prescriptions, OTC medicines, vitamins, and supplements in a brown bag (or other container), and bringing them to your primary care provider or pharmacist to carefully review for potential adverse reactions, dose changes, expiration, and necessity.

Brown Bag Reviews are an easy way for seniors (and their caregivers) to check that all of their prescriptions match up correctly and none have expired (which happens more than you think). By bringing in ALL medicines at once, a doctor or pharmacist can check them against each other and ensure that everything is correct before the patient leaves the office or pharmacy.

Again, patients must bring in ALL prescribed or OTC medicines, vitamins, and supplements to discuss potential interactions and to address any questions about whether a medication should be continued or adjusted.

Mixing up your medicine with the wrong dose or taking too many pills can be dangerous, or even fatal. To make matters worse, seniors often forget what they’ve taken and when. This is extremely dangerous because it could lead to negative interactions and potential overdoses.

The simple practice of a Brown Bag Review may help avoid serious side effects such as confusion, falls, dizziness, fainting spells, and even hospitalization due to adverse reactions between different medicines taken simultaneously by one person.

Brown Bag Review also helps patients stay on top of their medication schedules, so they don’t miss important doses, which could lead to health complications down the line, like heart attacks and strokes.

Brown Bag Review is a great way for seniors to ensure that all of their medications and supplements are working for them, not against them. A thorough check-up by a doctor or pharmacist will help ensure that the medications and supplements are safe for use in combination with each other and beneficial in treating symptoms and conditions for which they were prescribed or recommended.

Managing medications and activities of daily living can be a challenge for many seniors. However, a compassionate Home Helpers caregiver can provide medication and hydration reminders to help them stay on track; plan and prepare nutritious meals and snacks, especially when drugs must be taken with food; and lend support through companionship so they can feel confident knowing that someone is there to help.

I invite you to schedule a no-obligation FREE consultation today and discover how our personalized in-home care services can make life easier, safer, and more enjoyable for your senior loved one.

Early Detection of Breast Cancer is Key to Survival for Aging Women

A dear friend of mine, and fellow female business owner in Trinity, had the scare of her life in 2020. It wasn’t COVID. It was a breast cancer diagnosis.

She told me how tumultuous it had been being isolated, having to make critical decisions about her treatment options, getting dropped off and picked up at the curb of Florida Cancer Specialists, and seeing so many women and men who were waiting for cancer treatments. She felt heartbroken.

“It is amazing how many people I’ve already met throughout our community who are facing cancer. They are all levels & types, and there are too many! I have to wait in line when I go to Florida Cancer Specialists, and it’s heartbreaking,” she said.

My 60-something-year-old friend is a survivor because she found a lump in her breast and got a mammogram that resulted in a breast cancer diagnosis. She encourages aging women to get routine mammograms because early detection saved her life.

Mortality rates have improved over the years because early detection of breast cancer is key to survival for aging women.

An article by Brenda Lyle with Florida Today states, “The median age of a breast cancer diagnosis is 62, and nearly 20 percent of women diagnosed are over the age of 75, according to the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results registry. Yet the answer on how and when to screen and treat elderly women for breast cancer remains, ‘it depends.’”

It depends on a senior woman’s risk factors, which include:

  • Women who give birth to their first child before age 30 are at lower risk.
  • Post-menopausal women who use hormone replacement therapy with estrogen and progesterone have an increased risk of breast cancer.
  • Women who drink two or more alcoholic beverages a day are at one to one-and-a-half times greater risk than women who do not drink.
  • Women who are overweight or obese are more susceptible to the disease.
  • Women who lactate and breastfeed have a lower risk of breast cancer.

“While aging may bring a welcome end to some things for women, the risk of breast cancer is not one of them,” Lyle said.

The decision to get mammograms or not to get them after a certain age depends on the woman and the conversations she has with her primary care provider.

My friend was diagnosed in her early 60s, and she advocates getting routine mammograms, and she will continue getting screened in the event breast cancer returns.

For senior women with cognitive decline, breast cancer will likely NOT be their final cause of death, so mammograms may not be doctor-recommended.

Regardless of age or individual circumstances, mammograms – X-rays of the breasts – are critical for the early detection of breast cancer.

“In 2021, the Journal of the American Medical Association Oncology published new guidelines on surveillance mammography for breast cancer survivors over 75. It stresses an individualized approach that factors in the risks/benefits of continuing mammograms, the individual’s overall health status, and life expectancy.”

In terms of treatment options, the article continued, “Some treatments may cause side effects that are difficult for older patients to tolerate. Other health conditions can be present. And access to treatment itself can be influenced by socio-economic factors or be an issue for older women who are caregivers.”

What this says to me is that treatments like mastectomy, chemotherapy, or radiation may cause more harm than good for senior women and aging caregivers, negatively impacting their overall quality of life.

“Age alone cannot be a deciding factor in whether or not women seek screening or treatment for breast cancer,” Lyle writes.

Of course, senior women should have a dialogue with their doctor about the benefits of mammography and specific treatment options if breast cancer is detected, as well as research breast cancer resources to make the most informed decisions.

If I can help provide resources to aid in your decision-making process, do not hesitate to reach out to me or my staff at Home Helpers. I employ amazing, compassionate caregivers who help senior women every day, and each one is ready, willing, and able to help you or someone you love with transportation assistance to and from doctor appointments, mammograms, and treatments for breast cancer.

In addition, caregivers also make life easier by providing personal care, light housekeeping, meal planning and preparation, respite care for weary family caregivers, and so much more.

I welcome the opportunity to meet you or your loved one for a FREE Consultation to identify specific ways we can help. After our discussion, I can develop a customized care plan for our journey together, and my Home Helpers team can begin Making Life Easier for you and your family sooner than later.

Seniors Can Prevent Falls by Following these Guidelines

After more than 15 years in the home care industry, the caregivers at Home Helpers have assisted hundreds of seniors with varying needs. They have also had to help the majority of our clients and elderly family members who have experienced falls.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1 (CDC), approximately one in four older adults aged 65 and older falls each year. This translates to about 14 million falls annually in the United States.

It’s important to note that not all falls result in injuries. However, falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths and hospitalizations among older adults. In 2021, there were an estimated 32,000 fall-related deaths among older adults in the United States.

A brochure published by the CDC2 provides a Home Fall Prevention Checklist for Older Adults, which is an excellent resource to reference during Fall Prevention Month.

“Each year, millions of older people—those 65 and older—fall. In fact, more than one out of four older people fall each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Falling once doubles your chances of falling again,” the CDC reports.

Because falls often occur due to hazards in the home, seniors can prevent falls at home by following these guidelines to eliminate dangerous conditions that put them at risk of falling.

Stairs & Steps (indoors and outdoors)

Are there papers, shoes, books, or other objects on the stairs?

  • Always keep objects off the stairs.

Are there steps that are broken or uneven?

  • Fix loose or broken stairs.

Is there a light and light switch at the top and bottom of the stairs?

  • Have an electrician put in an overhead light and light switch at the top and bottom of the stairs. You can get light switches that glow, too.

Has a stairway light bulb burned out?

  • Have a friend or family member change the light bulb.

Is the carpet on the stairs loose or torn?

  • Make sure the carpet is firmly attached to every step, or remove the carpet and attach non-slip rubber treads on the stairs.

Are the handrails loose or broken? Is there a handrail on only one side of the stairs?

  • Fix loose handrails or install new ones. Make sure handrails are on both sides of the stairs and are as long as the staircase.

Floors

When you walk into a room, do you have to walk around furniture?

  • Ask someone to move the furniture so your pathways are clear.

Do you have throw rugs on the floor?

  • Remove the rugs or use double-sided tape or a non-slip backing so the rugs won’t slip.

Are there papers, shoes, books, or other objects on the floor?

  • Pick up things that are on the floor. Always keep objects off the floor.

Do you have to walk over or around wires or cords (like lamp, telephone, or extension cords)?

  • Coil or tape cords and wires next to the wall so you can’t trip over them. If needed have an electrician put in another outlet.

Kitchen

Are the things you use often on high shelves?

  • Keep things you use often on the lower shelves, about waist high.

Is your step stool sturdy?

  • If you must use a step stool, get one with a bar to hold on to. Never use a chair as a step stool.

Bedrooms

Is the light near the bed hard to reach?

  • Place a lamp close to the bed where it’s easy to reach.

Is the path from your bed to the bathroom dark?

  • Put in a nightlight so you can see where you’re walking. Some nightlights go on by themselves after dark.

Bathrooms

Is the tub or shower floor slippery?

  • Put a non-slip rubber mat or self-stick strips on the floor of the tub or shower.

Do you need some support when you get in and out of the tub, or up from the toilet?

  • Have grab bars professionally installed next to and inside the tub or shower and near the toilet.

For seniors living alone who are unable to follow these CDC guidelines for fall prevention because they have no family or friends around to help, I encourage you to contact me. I offer a FREE Assessment and home safety check. I can recommend professional colleagues and other resources to provide services to minimize falling hazards, and I can also match the perfect compassionate caregiver to provide in-home care services to make life easier and safer 24/7/365.

5 Steps to Support Prostate Health in West Pasco & Pinellas Counties

When it comes to reproductive health, men and women face different needs and recommendations. For women, annual mammograms and gynecologic exams are standard preventive measures. For men, yearly physicals often include prostate exams—an important step in monitoring the health of the prostate gland.

This small but vital part of the endocrine system produces fluid that carries semen through the penis and provides essential nutrients like zinc, citric acid, and enzymes to protect and support sperm cells.

Several conditions can affect the prostate gland as men age, and they include complications that can range from mild to severe. However, men can follow 5 steps to promote prostate health in West Pasco and Pinellas Counties, according to the Urology Center of Florida.

“Over time, your prostate may start to enlarge, and early on can be asymptomatic. This happens for men around age 40, although it affects a higher percentage of men around age 55.”

An enlarged prostate increases the risk of conditions like:

  • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) – Also known as an enlarged prostate, BPH is a noncancerous condition that affects a man’s ability to urinate due to pressure at the base of the bladder that can lead to obstructions in the urinary tract that cause urinary retention.
  • Prostatitis – This is inflammation of the prostate that can develop in the form of bacterial prostatitis and is most common in men ages 30-50. The cause is frequently unknown, and the nonbacterial type is harder to treat because symptoms vary from person to person.
  • Prostate Cancer – This is more common in men over age 50. The overall cause is unknown, but family history and age are primary risk factors. Early stages of prostate cancer are confined to the prostate gland, but as it develops and becomes more aggressive, it can spread to other systems and become dangerous to the whole body.

Ways to Maintain Prostate Health

  • Exercise regularly: Regular physical activity can help prevent the prostate from growing larger.
  • Keep a healthy weight: A healthy weight prevents the exertion of extra pressure on the bladder that may cause changes in the prostate gland.
  • Maintain a healthy diet: Fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins can help maintain a healthy prostate.
  • Avoid tobacco products: Smoking and using other tobacco products can lead to prostate cancer, so quit now.
  • Get regular screenings: Beginning at age 50, men should have regular prostate screenings to detect any changes. If there is a family history of prostate conditions, screenings should begin sooner.

September is Prostate Health Awareness Month, and at Home Helpers®, our compassionate caregivers help senior men every day by providing exceptional in-home care services to promote senior independence and a healthier quality of life. We gladly help with transportation assistance to doctor appointments and medical screenings to support men in achieving their health goals.

I encourage senior men who could benefit from the help of a compassionate caregiver to take advantage of my no-obligation FREE Consultation so I can assess specific needs and create a customized care plan to make life easier and healthier every day!

Pain Explained by Types and Impacts

Pain: physical suffering or distress, as due to injury, illness, etc.; a distressing sensation in a particular part of the body; mental or emotional suffering or torment

We’ve all experienced some sort of physical, mental, or emotional pain. Pain is a signal that something is wrong and requires repair and healing.

As a Certified Senior Advisor, I regularly meet with seniors and their families, and more often than not, they are dealing with some sort of pain that prevents them from performing activities of daily living and participating in social activities that are important for a healthy quality of life.

Pain, regardless of its nature or duration, imposes limitations that can restrict functionality and disrupt daily routines.  September is National Pain Awareness Month, and I guess that if you’re experiencing pain, you are keenly aware of it. Here, pain is explained by its types and impacts.

Types of Pain

Acute – Acute pain is short-term, lasting from a few minutes to as long as six months. It usually occurs due to a temporary illness or injury.

Chronic – Chronic pain is longer in duration and can be constant or intermittent. This is frequently attributable to an underlying medical condition, such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or a spinal disorder.

Neuropathic – Neuropathic pain is due to damage to the nerves or nervous system. It is typically described as feeling like pins and needles, shooting, stabbing, or burning. Neuropathic pain is commonly considered chronic, and in severe cases, it may interfere with activities of daily living, movement, and mobility.

Nociceptive – Nociceptive pain is caused by damage to body tissues. It can be perceived as sharp, achy, or throbbing pain that is most often caused by an external injury. Nociceptive pain is that which is experienced in joints, muscles, skin, tendons, and bones, and can be both acute and chronic.

Radicular – Radicular pain radiates discomfort to different areas of the body. It occurs when the spinal nerve gets compressed or inflamed due to vertebral subluxation. Radicular pain is often described as tingling or numbness and can cause muscle weakness. This type of pain is often steady.

Common Painful Conditions

  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Diabetes
  • Neck/Back Pain
  • Cancer
  • Chronic Migraine Headaches
  • Pinched Nerves
  • Sciatica
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Grief

At Home Helpers®, our exceptional caregivers regularly assist seniors who are suffering from different types and levels of pain by providing in-home care services to manage activities of daily living and make life easier.

Activities of daily living, like personal care, can be a problem for seniors contending with pain. A compassionate caregiver can help ensure personal hygiene remains a priority. Homemaker services help keep our clients’ homes clean and safe. Grocery shopping and meal preparation help seniors in pain eat nutritious meals and snacks, especially before they consume pain medications. Recuperative care and support for stroke recovery are critical for speedier healing. Companion care for seniors who live alone or those who have lost loved ones and are grieving is recommended for physical and mental support and engagement.

These senior care services are examples of what our highly skilled caregivers can easily manage. I gladly offer a FREE Consultation to discuss specific ways we can help you or someone you love who contends with painful physical, mental, or emotional health conditions.
