As Summer winds down and cooler weather approaches, August is the perfect time to prepare your home for a safe and comfortable Fall. For older adults, small changes around the house can make a big difference in preventing falls and maintaining independence. Take a walk through the home and look for potential hazards such as loose rugs, cluttered walkways, electrical cords and poorly lit areas. Check outdoor steps, porches, and walkways for cracks, leaves, or other obstacles, and make sure handrails are secure. It’s also a good time to replace burned-out light bulbs and consider adding nightlights in hallways, bathrooms and stairways.

Fall also brings earlier sunsets and changing weather, so make sure your loved one’s home is ready for the seasonal transition. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, have heating systems inspected as needed, and keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid unnecessary bending or climbing. Most importantly, involve your loved one in the process and focus on changes that help them feel safe, comfortable, and confident at home. At Home Helpers Home Care Delaware, Ohio, our caregivers can provide an extra set of helping hands with everyday tasks while offering companionship and support that help seniors continue to live safely and independently in the home they love.
